Legionella & Disinfecting Water Systems

This course is for plumbers and maintenance engineers employed by local councils and housing associations who are responsible for the physical maintenance of water systems. The Risk assessment of Water Systems manual is targeting people who are responsible for the management and maintenance of hot and cold water systems in residential accommodation, e.g. Managers of nursing homes and housing associations.

  • One of our more popular products is in the area of the legionella bacteria and Legionnaires disease. Under general health and safety law it is a legal requirement of employers and persons in charge of buildings to consider the risks from legionella. The objective is to train people to properly design and maintain water systems to minimise the risks from legionella. The training material is divided into two separate training courses, targeting plumbing operatives and water system managers, respectively.
  • Disinfection of Water Systems The Disinfection of Water Systems training manual is targeting operatives who wish to physically disinfect hot and cold water systems. The training manual explains the properties of water, with particular focus on how to prevent the development of the harmful legionella pneumophila bacteria, which causes Legionnaires disease. The manual explains how a water system should be disinfected and also lists the chemicals that are used in this process. The training course includes a practical demonstration of how to disinfect a water system.
  • The second training manual concerning legionella is called Risk Assessment of Water Systems. The training manual provides an introduction to the properties of water and the design of water systems. It is specifically concerned with the risk elements inherent in water systems that might lead to the development of the Legionella bacteria. Included in the training manual is a log book to be used in the risk assessment of a cold and hot water system to record the details of the system and its performance. A clean log book is included on a CD Rom within the manual.

BPEC will specialise in courses and training materials in the area of renewable energy and this course for solar heating is the first in a series of new training manuals to be launched in the next year. There is a strong demand for training materials for renewable energy, as plumbing operatives are responding to the increase in demand from environmentally and economically conscious consumers. Attendance at a BPEC Solar Hot Water training course is a requirement of the new minimum technical competency (MTC) document for solar installers and the certification is recognised by the BRE Micro-generation scheme.

Unvented Hot Water

Unvented Hot Water

The course is targeting operatives who wish to install Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems. Successful completion of the assessment will allow the installer to demonstrate their competence in the installation of Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems in order to join a Competent Persons Scheme which will allow the self-certification of installations. If the installer does not wish to join such a scheme it will demonstrate competency to the local Building Control department when submitting Building Control Notices prior to commencing work.

  • The training materials in the area of Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems consist of two different manuals, targeting England/Wales and Scotland, respectively. The Scottish version is very similar to the English one, however, some regulations differ and candidates north of the border thus need a separate training manual. For England/Wales, the training manual provides an introduction to and understanding of the requirements of the Approved Document G3, Part L1 and Part P of the Building Regulations. For Scotland, the manual is very similar but references Part J of the Building Standards. Both training manuals consist of 4 modules covering:

  • Compliance with other Building Regulations The prerequisite for attending the courses is that the person holds a recognised trade qualification or is working towards one or has evidence of a number of years of experience of working in the plumbing or heating industry. The training course is very comprehensive and kicks off with intensive training in the 4 modules, followed by the completion of three assessments. There is one practical assessment involved in the course. Candidates must successfully pass all three assessments in order to gain the BPEC Unvented.

Water Regulations

Plumbing & Mechanical Engineering Services Operatives working within the construction industry, may it be installation, design, or specification of water systems or within buildings containing water systems. It will also be of benefit to those learners with limited previous knowledge. Plumbers and heating engineers undertake training in this area in order to do the work to meet the requirements of the Water Supply Regulations. Why do I need a certificate? Under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, Water Companies can appoint approved contractors for the areas they cover. Holding a BPEC/WRAS Certificate should prove that the knowledge of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 is good enough for the operative to become an approved contractor provided they meet the other criteria laid down by the Water Companies.

  • What do you need to get on the course? Operatives who already have knowledge of Hot & Cold Water Systems.
  • What are the advantages of becoming an approved contractor? Approved contractors do not need to notify certain installations, which non-approved contractors must notify. Water Companies will compile a list of approved contractors, which the general public will use, and it is possible that the local authorities and housing associations will insist that plumbing contractors are 'approved contractors'.
  • How long is the course? The training at the Centre will be delivered by the Centre first of all sending the training package to the learner at least four weeks before the one-day course. The learner will have to work through all the questions in the twelve manuals before they attend the course. The Centre will then give the learner a further half-day training, followed by a half day of assessment.
  • When you will be attending. Self study, followed by a one day at the Centre for further training and assessment.
  • When does the course start? September
  • What's the course about? The course has been structured to be delivered using self learning material consisting of a set of self learning booklets and a course video. The training package will be sent to the learner four weeks before the one-day course. A one-day centre based training and assessment programme will follow this. During the four weeks prior to the one day training and assessment course the learner has to view the video and work their way through all the self assessment questions and check their answers.
  • Is work experience a necessary part of the course? Operatives should already have knowledge of hot and cold water systems.
  • How will you be assessed? The assessment will consist of two multi-choice papers, for one of which the learner will be able to refer to their training package manuals, and a practical test, where the learner will be asked to identify contraventions of the water regulations which are shown on the video.
  • What qualification will you achieve? Successful learners will receive a BPEC/WRS certificate of competence.

Those having achieved a NVQ Level 1 and 2 qualification in Plumbing, AVCE, National Certificate or Building Services Engineering qualification. The course is also available for existing experienced operatives within the Building Engineering Services sector. It may also be of interest to those who provide training and development for installers and specifiers.

  • A minimum NVQ Level 1 and Level 2, or equivalent qualification is required. Relevant industrial experience will be given consideration. Installers and specifies entering for the qualification should meet one of the following:
  • Appropriate operative level Building Services Engineering (City & Guilds) at Advanced Craft or NVQ Level 3 equivalent
  • Suitable technician level Building Services Engineering such as BTEC/Edexcel, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
